What are Phase II Lures?
Phase II Lures are hand-carved, hand-crafted from cedar wood (cedar has a long history and successful tradition in fishing). Phase II Lures are made to catch fish, and each Phase II lure design and color has caught fish before it is sold.
Pretty is as Pretty does:
Here’s a little SECRET: many fishing lures are built primarily to catch fishermen. That’s bassackwards since the primary function of a lure should be catching fish. Every lure from Phase II has proven it will catch fish. If you want pretty, buy a pretty lure. If you want to catch fish, buy a Phase II Lure.

Why hand-made, hand-carved cedar lures?
The traditional cedar lure is unpainted, no eyes, just a plug of cedar wood (great buoyancy, water-proof) with a lead head and single tail hook. It consistently catches fish. I like the tradition (and the fish-catching), so, I’ve taken cedar and carved it into various shapes, added strategically placed, specific amounts of weight, to achieve the desired swimming action, painted lure bodies in proven fish-catching colors, and the result is a variety of cedar lures addressing most inshore fishing opportunities. I also like the idea of made-in-America, one at a time, instead of mass-produced, mostly foreign-make and usually plastic (ever crack a plastic lure on a rock?) stuff. And as I’ve said before, and will repeat, Phase II Lures catch fish.
How are Phase II Lures made?
There are more than twenty-five production steps between a cedar plank and the finished, packaged lure. Every Phase II Lure is individually hand-carved, hand-made, and hand-crafted. After carving, each lure is belt-sanded once, then hand-sanded twice during finishing. The finish is brush-applied by hand - five coats of polyurethane varnish on clear lures, one primer coat, three acrylic color coats, two varnish coats on painted lures. Blue/white and white lures receive two non-yellowing lacquer in place of varnish. 100lb. split rings and swivels are used.
BigT lures have 1.5" stainless steel screw eyes implanted nose and tail with cement, in a pre-drilled pilot hole for lure integrity. BigT has a 6/0 single tail hook with double-layered, double-wrapped, hand-tied natural buck tail.
Dancer, Junior, Mongo, Poppy, Scooter & Surf Dawg lures are through-wired, with a single 4/0 tail hook, hand-tied natural buck tail.
Dancer, Mongo & Surf Dawg lures also have a 3/0, 3X treble body hook.
Phase II Lures Catch Fish!
The combination of design shape, size and weight placement gives Phase II Lures their unique movement through the water that attracts fish strikes. Proven fish-catching colors are used.
Phase II Lures are constructed primarily for light-medium casting with spinning or casting reels, 10-20 lb. line. If using braid 30-40lb. works best.
BigT, Junior, Mongo, Poppy & Surf Dawg are also excellent trolling lures (BigT can also be used as a teaser.) You can successfully troll Phase II Lures with spinning, casting, boat rods or wire.
Junior, Poppy & Surf Dawg are also effective as pencil poppers by easily reversing the split ring and hook from tail to nose.
More specific suggestions for fishing Phase II Lures are on each respective lure page of the website.
